What is the EU? After the second world war, a 'family' of democratic European countries was created, committed to working together for peace and prosperity. This unique organization became known as the European Union (EU).
Much of the co-operation was about trade and the economy but the EU gradually expanded its influence to include citizen's rights, security and justice, job creation, regional development and environmental protection.
The EU has currently achieved half a century of relative stability, peace and prosperity and has helped to raise living standards within its boundaries. The EU has also strengthened Europe's voice in the wider world and helped promote a stable business environment, stimulating growth and competitiveness.
The EU and Duty Free Shopping In line with the principles of a single market, the European Union is striving to achieve its long term aim of harmonising tax levels and excise duties across its member states. One step towards this was the abolition of Duty Free within the EU in 1999, a directive which is applicable to all current and future EU members. As a result, you are now only be able to purchase Duty Free goods if you are travelling to countries that remain outside the EU.
However, Alpha is committed to expanding the range of duty- and tax- paid products in-store, which should ensure that there are always plenty of great prices and product alternatives available.
Please refer to the Tax and Duty Free rules section for more information and a breakdown of all EU member countries. | |
